Every HVAC technician and installer on the job today will tell you the same thing: technology is completely transforming the industry so you better know your stuff and be able to keep up.

When HVAC techs and installers talk shop these days, the conversation is more often about things like iManifold remote probes and capacity modulation technology. If there is one thing that is true for every role in the HVAC trade in every region of the country, it is that getting up to speed on the latest technology before starting the job hunt is becoming more important as technology takes over more and more functions that were once purely mechanical.

These days, HVAC companies are more concerned than ever with hiring people who have proven they can study and absorb new technology concepts.

Even more important than what you may already know is whether or not you can apply yourself and learn more year after year. Graduating from an accredited HVAC technical program is a good indicator to employers that you are worth taking a chance on.

There are three choices for getting your technical skills education in HVAC technology:

Certificate
Career Diploma
Associate’s Degree

Each of these options has different strengths and weaknesses in terms of cost, depth of education, and the amount of time you need to commit. But all these options have proven to have concrete advantages over having no education at all.

Over the long term, the differences in salary and career progression tend to even out between the three choices. But completing any one of these types of programs can have a major positive impact on earning potential. In fact, according to a 2009 study, earning a certificate, career diploma, or associate’s degree leads to median earnings 27 percent higher than what can be expected with only a high-school education.

Where you go to school can influence the kind of education you receive in one of these programs. Most schools have at least some regional focus when it comes to the skills they teach. In the Northeast, for example, you are much more likely to find programs that include at least some instruction on oil burning furnaces, since those units remain popular in that part of the country. In Florida, you probably won’t hear too much about oil, but you can be sure that all types of air conditioning systems will be covered in great detail.

Licensing and Official Certification Often Require Education

On top of the salary bump and long-term career progression, getting a certificate, diploma, or degree in HVAC technology has many other practical advantages when it comes to getting started in the field.

Not only do most employers today look at your training background and education first, many state and municipal licensing authorities have started to create a licensing structure that requires some degree of formal classroom education. These requirements are sometimes in place for new techs getting into the field, but more often are required to earn specialized licenses, more advanced general licenses, and contractor licenses.

For example, Virginia, a state with some of the most academically intense requirements for anybody working towards a journeyman license, accepts a bachelor’s degree in a field like mechanical engineering, an associate’s degree in HVAC technology plus two-years practical experience, or HVAC vocational training in combination with four years experience.

It is very common for states to allow technical school training to count toward the total experience hours required for journeyman and other advanced licenses. Vermont, for instance, will allow a formal training program to substitute for 2,000 hours of the 4,000 usually required for a Type S specialty electrical HVAC license.

HVAC Programs Assist With EPA Certification

State and local licenses aren’t the only cards that technical training will help you earn.

Whether you are earning a diploma, certificate, or two-year degree, almost all HVAC programs today will include a component specifically designed to help you pass the federally-mandated EPA Section 608 certification exam. This is the most important certification in the industry and the best programs will also include the test itself so that you graduate with the card in hand.

Industry Certifications Are Sometimes Offered

NATE (North American Technical Excellence) certification is the best-recognized and most widely-respected voluntary certification in the HVAC trade. Some technical programs, particularly those that offer a focus in a specialized area of HVAC, have actually begun to offer NATE certification that aligns with the program’s focus as part of the package: Air Conditioning, Air Distribution, Gas, Oil, Hydronics (gas and oil), Heat Pumps, Commercial Refrigeration, Efficiency Analysis, HVAC Installation.

Major manufacturers, service shops and install contractors are increasingly using NATE as a standard certification, with many employers looking for it on job applications.

Union Apprenticeships Now Often Prefer Candidates with Some Formal Schooling

Even the UA (United Association) and International Association of Sheet Metal Workers, which offer comprehensive training through HVAC apprenticeship programs, are beginning to recruit apprentices from technical school programs.

Competition for apprenticeship positions is so great that unions are beginning to look for candidates with a certificate or degree before bringing them in. Bringing in apprentices who already understand the fundamentals of the technology allows instructors and journeymen mentors to introduce more advanced topics sooner.

In a keynote presentation at the 2017 Pipe Trades Training and Technology Conference where UA representatives were in attendance, Mark Breslin of Breslin Strategies, Inc said …

“This is a serious job. I’m not sure if we want to give these high-skill jobs to recent high school graduates. We need to look at the junior colleges… This is our source, and this is where I would go to recruit. We work in the thinking man’s trade, and the type of kids we’re looking for are of a high caliber.”

Courses Can Be Delivered Online

In a trade where technology is front and center, you better believe these programs offer the option to complete course content online.

Fully online programs can be combined with an internship or apprenticeship to give you the hands-on training you need while allowing you to study-up on things like electrical theory and the refrigeration cycle from home.

Hybrid programs that combine online and classroom-based courses with access to the school’s hands-on training lab have also become common, typically requiring you to attend class one night a week.

Shorter Programs With Specialty Tracks

If you’re looking for a quick program to get you into the HVAC trade and you don’t have a lot of money to spend, a certificate will get it done.

The use of the word certificate to describe HVAC programs does not have a consistent, universal meaning, so you should look closely at the specifics of any program you are interested in to be sure it offers the education you are looking for.

Some programs offer a certificate after a basic 8-hour seminar, possibly with no testing or individualized training. Others can last for up to four years and include apprenticeship options that set you up with 8,000 hours of job experience and more than 500 classroom hours. Obviously, one is going to prepare you with more comprehensive training. And even more obviously, potential employers will view those two types of certificates very differently.

Some certificate programs, particularly the ones offered at community colleges that also offer AAS degrees, might include some elective classes in addition to trade-specific courses. Students in a certificate program usually have access to the same elective courses available to AA students, but far fewer credit hours are allocated to electives in a certificate program.

Certificate programs in specialized focus areas are also common. These more narrowly focused programs include just a handful of courses instead of a more general education. Alaska’s Institute of Technology, for example, has only three courses leading to its Refrigeration Technician certificate:

Basic Refrigeration
Advanced Refrigeration
Electricity (Refrigeration)

This is particularly true for certificates offered through trade school programs.

On the other hand, community college programs that lead to a certificate tend to have a greater variety of more highly specialized courses, usually the same ones that lead to an AA degree, assuming the school also offers an associate’s degree option.

Since certificate programs provide a narrower focus on trade skills and fewer electives, you can generally expect the depth and thoroughness of trade-specific courses to be the same as what you would find in an associate’s degree program.

Some certificate programs offered through community colleges run together with a formal apprenticeship program, as is the case at the College of Western Idaho. These types of programs are an exception to the general rule that certificate programs are shorter than a degree program. The CWI certificate takes four years to earn – just as long as a bachelor’s degree.

A program like this would prepare you with 8,000 hours of actual on-the-job experience in addition to the 576 clock hours of classroom instruction, so you’re completely ready to step right into a journeyman position at the end of the program.

Advantages of a Certificate

The major advantages that generally apply to certificate programs are:

Fast Completion

Another advantage to some certificate programs is the focus on a specific role within the industry. Although many certificates provide the same sort of general HVAC technology education as AA programs, there are also certificates available that drill down directly into a narrow subset of HVAC work. At NTT (National Technology Transfer) training schools, for example, you can get a certificate in one of four areas:

HVAC
Air conditioning and refrigeration only
Boilers
Chillers

This offers a great option if you have no plans to work outside of one of those specialty areas.

Career Diploma In HVAC

The Middle-Ground Between a Certificate and a Degree

Career diplomas tend to cost less than an associate’s degree but offer a broader and more in-depth education than certificate programs, making them a good compromise option.

Career diploma programs occupy the middle ground between certificate and AA degree programs. Depending on the school and the region, there may not be much difference between a certificate program and a career diploma. In other places, diploma programs may last slightly longer and go deeper into core topics than a certificate program.

At Athens Technical College in Georgia, for example, which offers both certificates and diplomas in Air Conditioning, the Air Conditioning Electrical or Maintenance Technician certificate only takes 12 credit hours of instruction. Compare that to the school’s diploma in Air Conditioning Technology, which requires 51 credit hours and covers a far broader spectrum of subjects.

Unlike certificates, other important collegiate skills are often covered in a career diploma program. Although not directly related to HVAC technology, these skills do prepare students for the realities of the HVAC business, which often involves invoicing, writing bidding proposals and documenting jobsite progress.

Advantages of a Career Diploma

You would find the same subjects in a career diploma program as you would in an AA program, but a diploma won’t usually include electives or any other subject not directly tied specifically to HVAC technician core duties.

This can make a diploma program a good option for you if you want a deeper dive than what some certificate programs offer, but do not feel the need to prepare for further college education.

Associate’s Degree in HVAC

In-Depth Technical Training Combined with a College Education

If you can dedicate the time, an AA will give you technology-focused HVAC training and college credits that can be transferred to a bachelor’s degree program.

Associate’s degrees in HVAC technology are all about learning how to apply your technical skills to the trade in the real world, so they are structured as AAS (Associate in Applied Science) or AAT (Associates in Applied Technology) programs. Like all associate’s degrees, they are designed to provide an education that will allow you to enter the workforce immediately after you graduate.

AA programs are almost always two years in length and are usually offered through community or junior colleges. One of the major differences from certificate and diploma programs is that you are getting a college education. Your classes will include general studies courses like English, mathematics, computer science, and humanities electives.

This may not seem important when you’re gunning for a job in the trades, but consider this: Working out in the real world involves more than changing out compressors and programming logic boards. Customer service is actually one of the more important parts of many HVAC jobs. Dialing in your communication and writing skills in an English class, for example, can help you in every facet of your career, especially if you’re looking to be in a position to bid jobs or if you plan to go into business for yourself at some point.

But developing a broad set of technical skills is still the main focus. An AA provides the broadest perspective on the complete HVAC system, from overall design aspects to the intricacies of each individual component. In addition to diving deeper into the scientific theory behind the refrigeration cycle and electricity, AA programs go into topics like:

Mechanical and gas safety codes
Piping practices
Heat load calculations
Heat pumps
Commercial and residential air conditioning

But a broad education doesn’t mean you can’t also specialize. Associates programs are also long enough and comprehensive enough to offer a significant number of in-depth elective options. These classes can provide a deep dive into any number of specialized aspects of the HVAC field, including:

Ice machines
Technical drawing and blueprint reading
Contractor exams
Commercial and domestic refrigeration systems
Commercial heating systems

On the flip side of this, AA programs provide a broad education that you may not need if you only plan to specialize in one particular area. If you intend to become a boiler technician or refrigeration specialist, for example, time spent in domestic air conditioning classes isn’t going to do you a lot of good.

Advantages of an AA Degree

AA degrees, perhaps surprisingly, don’t necessarily translate into higher salaries, despite a higher initial investment and, often, more classroom hours spent on each subject.

What they do provide is a more well-rounded education that pays dividends over the long term. Having additional liberal arts or business education courses under your belt would make you a better candidate for a management promotion, not to mention the fact that it would better prepare you to go into business for yourself.

An AA degree is also a stepping-stone to a bachelor’s degree. For technicians hoping to advance to senior positions or even to move into engineering or architecture, this is a move that can save time and money since most AA credit hours can be applied toward earning a bachelor’s degree.

Institutional and Programmatic Accreditation

Now that you’ve got a solid understanding of what kind of education options are going to be available to you through a technical college, you can move on to the bigger challenge of actually selecting a program.

Looking at individual HVAC programs that have met the qualifications to be accredited and technical schools and community colleges that hold institution-level accreditation is a pretty universally recognized way of making sure you’re selecting a quality program that’s got a good reputation in the industry.

This isn’t to say that good HVAC training can’t be found outside the list of accredited schools and programs. But think of the accreditation process as a layer of verification that has already been done for you, and something that will give you a little extra peace of mind in knowing you’re getting the kind of education that is going to prepare you for the trade and that employers will see as meeting quality standards.

Participating in an accredited program or a program offered through an accredited school is also a standard requirement of any state or municipal licensing body that requires formal training as part of initial licensing or license maintenance for technicians and contractors. Accredited programs and programs through accredited schools are also more often geared toward meeting industry standard professional HVAC certification.

Programmatic Accreditation

For HVAC, building automation and industrial controls technical school programs, there are four widely recognized accreditation agencies that offer program-level accreditation:

While academic accreditation from other agencies speaks to the professionalism of instructors and the rigor of coursework and curriculums, these trade-groups offer accreditation that goes more toward the actual course content. Programs that hold accreditation can be expected to include things like:

HVAC equipment that students practice on
Specific tools to be used in training
Classroom supplies
Industry-standard instructor qualifications (instructors hold EPA Section 608 Universal certification, for example)

Institutional Accreditation

With a relatively limited number of programs that hold program-level accreditation through HVAC Excellence, it’s more common to simply verify that the school you’re considering has been accredited at the institutional level through one of the accrediting agencies the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) recognize. This includes agencies that specialize in accrediting vocational schools and technical colleges, a general regional accreditation agency or even a state agency operating under the auspices of state government.

Any school you select that holds accreditation through one of these organizations comes with the assurance that the programs it offers is held to some pretty rigorous standards:
